Commissions - Portraits

Basic Info

All portrait commissions are created using oil paints.

Prices are determined by a number of factors, including size, number of figures, complexity, etc. The price includes materials, sittings*, and painting time, but does not include framing and delivery costs. Sitters are welcome to come to my studio based in Leeds for the session or I would happily travel to you. Sittings typically take 2-3 hours (based on a single person), which would include sketches, collaborative discussion, and photography. Daytime sessions are preferred for the best natural light conditions.

A deposit of 50% is required to secure the commission and 50% will be required upon completion. Collection is available or any delivery costs will be calculated at the receipt of final payment.

I do not take portrait requests based on photographs unless there are extenuating circumstances i.e. the passing of a loved one, and then the references would have to be considered carefully before accepting.

*The cost of travel and/or accommodation is not included in the price and is determined by location. If I am able to travel and do the sitting in one day I will do, but if overnight stay is needed then accommodation costs will also apply.

Portrait commissions are available on wood panel, canvas, or linen.

Prices are from £450 for a small head and shoulders approx. 21×30cm to £6,000 for a group portrait (2-4 figures) or complex portrait at 1.5m. If your commission request exceeds 1.5m please do get in touch but be aware the timescale for a painting that size would be considerably longer. Larger commissions can take 3-8 months while smaller pieces can take 1-4 months depending on the date of the sitting. The drying time is a factor for the commission time too, so do bear that in mind. Typically, oil paintings are ready after at least 1 month of drying time, and it can be longer depending on the size.
